The distance around is 2*pi*radius. The area of the side is that distance multiplied by the height. If it helps, think of the side of the cylinder cut along the longitudinal axis, and laid out on the table as a rectangle. If we do a two significant figure estimate, we get 6*13*15, which is close to 1200.
