Show and Answer Problems! :D Medal Rewarded! :D Find the Vertical Asymptote (VA) & Hole for the following problems: 4. 3 over x^2 - 4x + 4 5. x - 1 over x^2 + 4x - 5 6. x over x + 1 7. 6 over (x - 2) (x + 3) 8. x^2 - 25 over x - 5 9. x - 5 over x + 1 10. 4 over (x - 1)^2 11. x + 2 over (x - 3) (x + 2) 16. 2 over x^2 - 5x + 6 17. 4 over x^2 + 2x - 8 18. x + 3 over x^2 + 7x + 12 19. x - 5 over x^2 - 4x - 5 20. x^2 - 8x + 16 over x - 4 21. x^2 - 3x + 2 over x - 1

OpenStudy (firejay5):

My Answers: 4. VA: x = 2 5. VA: x = 5 & Hole: x = 1 6. VA: x = -1 7. VA: x = -3 & x = 2 8. Hole: x = 5 9. VA: x = -1 & Hole = x = 5 10. VA: x = 1 11.VA: x = 3 & Hole: x = -2 16. VA: x = 2 & x = 3 17. VA: x = 4 & x = 2 18. VA: x = -4 & Hole: x = 3 19. VA: x = -1 & Hole: x = 5 20. Hole: x = 4 21. Hole: x = 1

OpenStudy (mertsj):

You know what would probably be quickest would be to type these into Wolf and look at the graph.

OpenStudy (firejay5):

so just check my answers and see if they're 100% right

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Why does number 9 have a hole at 5?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Why isn't 17 x = -4 and x = 2?

OpenStudy (firejay5):

Hold one just give me a second

OpenStudy (mertsj):

In 18 why isn't the hole at -3?

OpenStudy (firejay5):

Hold on the question @Mertsj stressing me out here

OpenStudy (firejay5):

#9: It's suppose to be VA: x = 5 & Hole: x = 1 #17: I forgot the "-" sign #18: I forgot the "-" sign

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Other than that, I agree.

OpenStudy (firejay5):

The answer I had above was correct

OpenStudy (mertsj):

ok

OpenStudy (firejay5):

@Mertsj , because if you graph it on a calculator you will see a vertical asymptote at x = -1 and a Hole at x = 5, because at 5 on the table has a zero on it, so it's a Hole

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Which one are you talking about?

OpenStudy (firejay5):

#9 so sorry

OpenStudy (mertsj):

I understand the asymptote at x = -1 but if x = 5, you have 0/6 which is 0 for the point (5,0) is on the graph. In fact it is a zero of the function.

OpenStudy (firejay5):

was I right

OpenStudy (mertsj):

I think number 9 is a vertical asymptote at x = -1 and no holes.

OpenStudy (firejay5):

okay thanks, are my other answers correct

OpenStudy (mertsj):

I think so. I could have made an error but except for the things I noted, I agree with your answers.

OpenStudy (firejay5):

error to which one

OpenStudy (mertsj):

What do you mean?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

All I meant was I am not perfect and could have overlooked something.

OpenStudy (firejay5):

Want to double check yourself?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

No.

OpenStudy (firejay5):

you sure

OpenStudy (mertsj):

yep. We agree on all of them now, don't we?

OpenStudy (firejay5):

even satellite

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Satellite agreed with all YOUR answers?

OpenStudy (firejay5):

really! :/ 4 - 11 is bonus, so I am trying to get them right

OpenStudy (mertsj):

So I must have some wrong because I did not agree with all of them.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Satellite agreed there was a hole at 5 in number 9?

OpenStudy (firejay5):

so I was right?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

I don't think so.

OpenStudy (firejay5):

why you say that

OpenStudy (mertsj):

I think I have already explained to you why I don't think there is a hole at 5.

OpenStudy (firejay5):

It's a Zero, but not a hole

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Yes.
