PLEASE HELP ME. i am this close to throwing myself down a cliff. I need some advice about why a person would major in biology or psychology and what you could do with those majors PLEASE HELP ME
depends on what you want to do with your life and career
if you want to go into studying fish populations for instance, then you would major in biology and go from there with psychology, you can use that to get employment in places that deal with people (like human relations or as a counsellor)
one of the big issues for people why study psychology is that they are shocked at how much statistics work there is in the course...
One of the most high paying degrees only requires a masters, I/O Psych. However, the duties of I/O are not what people normally think of as a psychologist. Think of it as the applied research branch of psychology but with Industry and Organization as the prime focus. http://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oes193032.htm
And that one is hugely stats based. Just tossing it out as a contrast to the normal view of psych as counseling jobs, research into human nature, ans so on.
if one of your goals were to go to medical school or somekind of graduate school, would it make more sense to major in bio? if you will end up taking most of the classes for it to fulfill the prerequisites??????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
bio makes more sense if you're going into medicine, but you might need some psychology behind you
so I would do both, but put more emphasis on the bio (and other life sciences like anatomy, physiology, etc)
i've reached a point where changing majors would seriously spell disaster in terms of graduating on time. i dont know whether to just leave my major as is and get some kind of degree just so that i would be able to graduate on time.....................what should i do?
Psych might be better if going towards research in medicine. And it is not at all critical for Psychiatry. My dad happens to be double boarded in Pediatrics and Psychiatry and he constantly complains that he used more Psychology in Pediatrics than in Psychiatry. They are basically forcing Psychiatry to become pill pushers with no long term patient evaluations.
Not 100% sure, but I would think that psychology in general would be better applied to fields in medicine dealing with the brain other fields of medicine may not rely on psych so much, but not completely sure
which is why I'm thinking bio is the better choice then again, bio may encompass things you may not want such as marine science or something like that
One other application of psychology is in dealing with patents, families, etc. It will get you the discipline for doing the thesis part of the MD because of how much research you will already have dealt with. However, every MD program I have seen lists getting in hard sciences as good preparation.
The reason why they push science is not so much for medical school as it is for the MCAT score. Sure, you need to be familliar with science before medical school, but without high MCAT scores you won't be in medical school, so...
