when the telescope was invented, how a telescope works, and at least one modern telescope that has been used to advance our understanding of the universe in the last 100 years.

The Hubble Telescope. They were invented during the renaissance by Galileo.(not sure it was him but it was during the 1600's) They work by using lenses to gather and focus electromagnetic radiation.
