2(a + 4) + (-8) First we need to distribute through the parenthesis...this will eliminate the parenthesis. This is called the distributive property. To do this, you take the number or the sign before the parenthesis, and multiply it by everything in the parenthesis. 2*a + 2*4 - 8 (the 8 becomes negative because a + x - = - ) 2a + 8 - 8 Now you combine like terms 2a < -- this is all that is left because the 8's cancelled each other out.
