What is the connection between poverty and soil erosion in developing countries?

A destructive positive feedback cycle.

Here's why.

"destructive" is simple, it means what you think it does. Bad stuff happens, stuff we want to avoid. Poverty increases, and natural resources are ruined. A "constructive" feedback cycle would lead to desirable outcomes, like increased wealth.

A feedback cycle is just a circular relationship... A has an effect on B, and B has an effect on A, which has an effect on B... it's. Chickens cause eggs cause chickens cause eggs.

"positive" is the tricky part, but it's really quite simple. A feedback cycle is just a circular cause. One thing (A) causes another thing (B), which in turn has some effect on A again. A feedback cycle is positive if B causes MORE of A to occur. In this example, Poverty causes farmers to ruin the soil, and when the soil is ruined, that creates more poverty.



A feedback cycle is negative if B causes less of A. Here's an example: Plummeting prices cause more people to buy a particular product, but when more people buy the product, the price increases.

So, in a nutshell,
C. A destructive (because it is bad) positive (because the effect produces MORE of the cause) feedback cycle (which means the effect somehow works its way back to effecting the thing that caused it).
