Two planes which are 1060 miles apart , leave at the same time and fly toward each other , meeting in 4 hours . If their rates differ by 15 miles per hour , what is the rate of each plane ?

OpenStudy (zpupster):

let x be slower plane x+15 faster plane from distance formula distance = rate x time d = 1060 4hrs = time 1060 = 4x + 4(x+15) 1060 = 4x + 4x + 60 subtract 60 from both sides of equation 1000 = 8x x = 125 slow plane x= 140 fast plane check 4 x 125 = 500 4 x 140 = 560 500 + 560 = 1060 checks --but these are some slow panes!!!!!!!!!!!!!
