Why was the ostwald process important?

The Ostwald Process is the process of oxidizing ammonia gas directly with oxygen in the presence of a heated catalyst (platinum) to produce nitric acid. Nitric acid has extensive industrial uses and the process is a methods to produce it effectively in large quantities.
