In 1789 it was great timing for the Nobles and French Royalty,as for the people well they where in horrible condition and lived in poverty. As for contributions well one would be the Maya culture whom made many contributions,they developed an advanced writing system.They also were gifted mathematicians who independently developed the concept of zero, and astronomers who deduced that a solar year was slightly more than 365 days. :)
