The figure below shows CB = 8, BE = 12, AB = 3x – 1, and DB = 4x + 2. Triangle ABC is a right triangle with measure of angle ACB equal to 90 degrees. The measure of side CB is 8 and AB is 3 multiplied by x minus 1. D is a point on the left of C on BC extended. A point E is labeled on AB such that DE is perpendicular to AB. Measure of EB is 12 and DB is 4 multiplied by x plus 2 If △ABC ~ △DBE, the value of x is _________

@timo86m

OpenStudy (anonymous):

set up a ratio :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i tried that! but I'm not sure if I'm on the right path :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i did 12/3x-1= 8/4x+2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and ;)there is another

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8/12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alright. I'm lost :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8/12=(3x-1)/(4x+2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

small side / large size= hypotonuse of small side/ hypotonuse of large size

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh! so just switch it around then solve..?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cross multiply :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 2.67...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol try again :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay. so. 8x 4x+2 which is 3x+16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

12 x 3x-1 which is 36-12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3x + 16 = 24

OpenStudy (anonymous):

minus 16 on both sides

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3x = 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then the 2.67 :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8/12 is 2/3 2/3 = (3*x-1)/(4*x+2) With me so far?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay. so simplify the ratio

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yup :) 8/12=(3x-1)/(4x+2) 2/3 = (3*x-1)/(4*x+2) cuzz 8/12 is 2/3 2=3*(3x-1)/(4x+2) multiply both sides by 3 to have 2 by itself on the lhs(left hand side) with me stil :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 7..?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes it was 7 LOL :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

WWWAAAHHHOOOOOO!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

YYYAAAY! thank youu soo much :DD
