What do you think could be done to discourage the flow of illegal timber from Southeast Asia to other markets? Why do you think the efforts up until now have not been enough to stop this black market activity?

A whole host of certification schemes have developed to start checking on this problem. The most forceful is the Forest Stewardship Council. They are made up of Nongovernmental organizations and industry groups and attempts to create clear ways for consumers to choose good forestry practices. Pressuring stores in your town to only buy FSC certified wood is a good way to start this. If every consumer in the United States and Europe stopped buying it, it would stop happening immediately.
