you have to make the fractions have the same denominator so you multiply both fractions by the LCM of the two

so if you had 1/2+1/3, you would first multiply (1/2)(3/3)+(1/3)*(2/2) and then add them together because 2*3=6 and both 3 and 2 go into 6 without any remainders
