How did the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race get started? Mushers began the race each spring to break away from the boredom of winter. The people in Nome created it as a pleasant change from working hard all year. Native Americans began the race and the tradition has continued. It began as a race for medicine in 1925 and is now commemorated every year.
