why are gases like water vapour, carbon dioxide.... called green house gases??

They are called green house gases because they create something called the Green House Effect when they get trapped in the atmosphere and that causes warming of the Earth.

Green houses are the artificial enclosures that let the light in and trap the heat to create an environment suitable for plant growth. http://www.lmgtfy.com/?q=green-house certain gases collect in the atmosphere and create a similar effect by trapping solar heat within the atmosphere and the surface temperature on earth increases, just like in green-houses. Hence the name green-house effect and green-house gases
