Actually, the Pyramids at Giza were designed by different people a thousand years before Tut was even born to give you an idea of how long lasting the Egyptian civilization was before the arrival of Alexander the Great and the empire of Rome after him. Tut's greatest achievement, however, was probably in what he left behind in death -- his tomb. His is the only royal tomb to have been left largely untouched by robbers leaving us an invaluable history of Egyptian society at the time. Most royal tombs discovered had been robbed or desecrated in some way, or had the mummies moved out to a safe location instead. None had the massive trove of treasures and items that Tut's did. The gold Egyptian face mask that you might have seen posted everywhere is from King Tut's tomb. Another achievement that he was responsible for in life was the return to power of the former priesthoods for the old Egyptian gods. His father, Akhenaton, had tried to introduce a monotheistic religion focused on the sun and stripped a lot of the power from the priests at the time. The power of the pharoah was such that the entire nation followed his lead, building temples to honor the new god. When he died and Tut took over, the guy was only a young kid (he was 9 when he became pharoah). Though records show that the old priesthoods regained their power during his reign, there's debate on whether he was directly responsible for much of that change or whether he was manipulated by the power brokers of the age. We'll probably never know.
