...a series of unstable governments. It's one of the sad chapters on Afghanistan that after the Soviets left, the US didn't stick around to help ensure a stable government rose up afterward. Instead, Afghanistan was largely left to figure things out on its own, collapsed into civil war as a number of factions made a bid for power (and were made proxies, in turn, by other countries such as Saudi Arabia and Iran), and eventually saw everything fall into the hands of a theocracy controlled by the Taliban.
