Was the end of communism in the Soviet Union positive or negative for the former Soviet republics? Explain your answer. Do you think the United States has become safer and more secure since the end of the Cold War, or less so? Explain.
What events led to the breakup of the Soviet Union? -Poor centralized planning for an archaic industrialized country that still is years behind industrially. The Cold War broke their economy and eventually the people wanted something better. With the East Germans, etc trying to cross over, eventually the Communists gave up fencing them in. As the Berlin Wall fell, all of the invisible walls started crumbling.
Was the end of communism in the Soviet Union positive or negative for the former Soviet republics? -Many have argued that its reforms have been too fast and radical, criticizing "shock therapy", "neo-liberalism", monetarism and privatization. However, Russia's financial collapse in August 1998 made obvious that the reforms have neither been radical nor fast, but slow and partial. The Russian state remains large and pervasive.
Do you think the United States has become safer and more secure since the end of the Cold War, or less so? -I think so,the less tensions there are in the world (and Cold War was one big tension between the West and the Eastern Bloc),the safer you are.
Ronald Reagan. The finest president since George Washington forced the Soviet Union to spend themselves to death. They died of economic exhaustion. Now there's countless super-expensive soviet aircraft wasting away on abandoned airfields and an expensive soviet navy rusting away in their berths. Russia isn't entirely out of the game, however. They still have a considerable fleet of submarines capable of inflicting a substantial "first-strike" blow if called upon to do so. With putin in office, they're still elbowing for position in proxy wars against the west and may be the causitive agent of the next major war against the religion of death. .
