What is the solution set of |x + 5| > 1? x < –6 or x > 6 x < –6 or x > –4 x < –4 or x > –4 x < –4 or x > 6

sam (.sam.):

I'd suggest you square both sides then quadratic equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but im dealing with absolute value...i dont know if you can do whatever you just said to do

sam (.sam.):

\[(x+5)^2>1 \\ \\ x^2+10x+25-1>0 \\ \\ x^2+10x+24>0 \\ \\ (x+4)(x+6)>0 \\ \\ x=-4 ~~x=-6\] |dw:1367044615927:dw| x<-6 , x>-4

sam (.sam.):

Everytime you see an absolute value with inequalities I suggest you should square both sides

hartnn (hartnn):

just to mention an alternative method : |a+b| > c ---> a+b > c or a+b < -c solve these 2 equations separately to get 2 inequalities
