In the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird," what does Tom Robinson's trial symbolize?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that the community basically killed a mocking bird. Tom Robinson didn't do anything wrong, however, he was shot. As Atticus said "it is a sin to kill a mockingbird" and miss Maude said "because all they do is sing and and bring people joy" Tom was the Mockingbird.
