Am I correct? Given the triangle below, which of the following is a correct statement? The picture and choices are below: Is the first choice correct?
Well, I'm not the type to just tell you if you are correct so I'm going to make sure you know the definitions. What is sine? (choices for words opposite adjacent hypotenuse)
Sine is the ratio of the side opposite the angle to the hypotenuse of the triangle
good, and what is cosecant?
Cosecant is the reciprocal of sine
ok now what is the sine of angle C?
So the opposite of the hypotenuse would be C (6), so the opposite would be A (5) is that correct?
Not quite, remember angle C is in the top right. You want the side directly opposite this angle. It's just your point of reference, this is a definition that you will have to memorize though.
Ok you are right so the opposite side would be B
You were looking at it from the Hypotenuse, look at it from the angle. And, no B is an angle not a side
ex. if you have |dw:1367120786639:dw| \[sinA=\frac{a}{c}\]
so can you tell me in your problem now, What is the sine of angle C?
so the sine would be 5
no. please look at the example and see that it is a fraction to start with, then look at what side is opposite in my picture. Compare this to yours and tell me what side is opposite of angle C.
I was thinking the fraction would be 5/6 but I am just confusing myself more. I am just going to call it a night and try to do some reading up on this again tomorrow. Thank you for your help though.
NO! you can do this it, should only take a max of 5 more minutes to understand completely.
no because in your picture the side labeled 5 is adjacent to angle C because it forms angle C with the hypotenuse. The opposite side is also the side not used to create the angle to begin with. Do you understand this?
Ok that makes sense atleast I think so, so the opposite side would be the one with the 4 on it.
right. Now just to make sure you have the idea, what side is opposite angle B in your picture?
C
No, Capital letters are angles not sides please try again.
ok so same question...
