Why did fighting on the Western Front of World War I become a stalemate with high casualties but little progress?

Everything became bogged down in trench warfare. Massive networks of trenches were dug into the ground to give soldiers cover from bullets, but advances in artillery technology blasted soldiers on the battlefield with horrific results. Despite bombardments, though, soldiers still had to rush over and take territory making them easy targets again for bullets. No one had a real advantage on the battlefield.
