Scholarship essay question confusion? Essay: How has the urbanization of rural farming communities changed the political and socioeconomic landscape? If given the opportunity what would you change to support both the sustainability of agricultural areas and the growing hi-tech industrial population? I don't even know how to answer this, help?
i think it will help to look up historical examples of rural farming communities that got urbanized, the closer to home the better. what happened to these communities? i think there's this argument that rural farming is somehow more benign to the ecology because the farmer engages in a sort of peaceful co-existence with the environment. did the ecology collapse after the suburban crowd moved in? i am not sure hi-tech urbanization and sustainable agriculture are inherently contradictory. the recent trends towards urban agriculture are big examples that show convincingly that it's possible to grow food sustainably, even in the depths of a concrete-crusted world. so we want to look up one or two specific, inspiring examples and modify them. they would form the model of your proposal. (there was a recent TED talk on urban farming) so it's going to be a lot of work, but it is useful beyond satisfying the immediate purpose that you are writing this for. for one thing, we learn more about the world. for another, it trains us in the techniques of making arguments about technologies and writing proposals.
