Solve 3x^2 + x + 10 = 0. Round solutions to the nearest hundredth.

OpenStudy (austinl):

\[3x^2+x+10=0\] Are you familiar with the quadratic equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i thought it was this x ≈ −1.67 and x ≈ 2.01

OpenStudy (austinl):

Are you quite sure that you copied it down correctly, because I am getting imaginary numbers when I work it out.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i tryed 1 one time x ≈ −2.83 and x ≈ 0.83

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@austinL

OpenStudy (austinl):

@satellite73 would you care to take a crack at this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@austinL i also got complex numbers as the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so theres No real solutions?

OpenStudy (austinl):

Ok, so I am doing this right. In this instance, I would use the quadratic equation. And doing so, I do not get real numbers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so im right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yh....there are no real solutions.......

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they are complex (imaginary) numbers!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thnx

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you are welcome :)
