Tabitha wants to hang a painting in a gallery but the painting and frame must have an area of 58 square feet. The painting is 7 feet wide by 8 feet long. The frame must have an equal width of x on each side. Which quadratic equation represents the area of the painting and frame combined?

7x X 8x = 58

OpenStudy (nathan917):

When you add x on each side of the painting, the width and length are (2x + 7) and (2x + 8) the area is then (2x + 7)(2x+8) = 58 multiplying this out gets you 4x^2 + 16x + 14x + 56 = 58 which you can rearrange into 4x^2 + 30x - 2 = 0
