A boy lifts a weight of 75 N from the floor to the top of a table, a vertical distance of 6.0 meters. Compute the increase in the potential energy of the weight.

OpenStudy (ivancsc1996):

Okay so, do you know the equation for potential energy?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

PE = mgh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that it?

OpenStudy (ivancsc1996):

Yeah. Do you know what is h?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

height?

OpenStudy (ivancsc1996):

Yeah but I mean which is the value of h in this problem.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh 6.0m

OpenStudy (ivancsc1996):

Ok great now you need to figure out what mg is. mg is mass times gravitational acceleration. But you don't have neither mass nor the gravitational acceleration. Well what happens is that those 75N they gave you as the "weight" is that mg. So mg=75N. Now that you know mg, solve the equation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so its 450 J?

OpenStudy (ivancsc1996):

Yeap :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

k thanks! :)
