!what's the defintion of a scatter plot graph? and whats the meaning?

OpenStudy (precal):

scatter plots are just a whole bunch of point that are scatter

OpenStudy (anonymous):

scatter diagram Basic Def: A graphic which shows data where one variable has been plotted against a second variable. Scatter diagrams are used when investigating correlation between two variables.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a scatter plot is when you have a data set with two variables, time and a corresponding price, or time and a corresponding height of a tree. a scatter plot is used to see if there are any trends in the data. if you have the data set that consists of years (0,1,2,3,4,5,etc) and height (21 inches, 34 inces, etc), you can plot them against each other

OpenStudy (precal):

if they go upward, then it is said that they have a positive correlation if they go downward, then it is said that they have a negative correlation if they do not go in any direction, then it is said they have no correlation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so @JeanetteBaker would the height be on the x-axis or the y-axis?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

normally time is on the horizontal x axis

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and height would be on the vertical y axis

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but does it matter if it's on the y axis?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it doesnt really matter, as long as you know what is going on and how to interpret what you see

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you need to find a trend line, it is of the form y=mx+b, so you can use that formula and move it around to make it in terms of x... x=(y-b)/m if need be
