OpenStudy (followthefez):

Please explain what is going on in this reaction?

OpenStudy (followthefez):

I can't figure out what type of reaction this is. If someone could just name it for me please I'm sure I could figure out the mechanism.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

H-C≡C-H + NaNH2 —> H-C≡C-Na + NH3 H-C≡C-Na + CH3-I —> H-C≡C-CH3 + NaI

OpenStudy (abb0t):

\(NaNH_2\) is taking a proton from the alkyne portion of your molecle in which case you then have a Nucleophile which can then undergo \(Sn_2\) reaction with the benzyl iodide (iodine is a good leaving group)
