find the number of possible license plates with 5 letters followed by two numbers?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Assuming repeats are allowed you have.... 26 choices for slot 1 (26 alphabetical letters) 26 choices for slot 2 26 choices for slot 3 26 choices for slot 4 26 choices for slot 5 10 choices for slot 6 (digits 0 through 9...there are 10 single digits) 10 choices for slot 7 Multiply all the choices out to get 26*26*26*26*26*10*10 = 1,188,137,600 So there are 1,188,137,600 different license plates (assuming repeats are allowed)

you don't add, you multiply

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, you're correct @jim_thompson5910. Revised: There are 26 available letters. There are 10 available digits. The plate uses 5 letters and 2 digits. That makes the possible combinations 26^5 * 10^2
