2 y - 7y - 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What exactly are you asking? y squared minus seven y minus 8 equals zero? And are you looking to factor it, or find y?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i need to factor each trinomial

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright. To start with we know that since it is a square trinomial, you will end up with two terms y plus or minus some number. Also, for future reference set your trinomials equal to zero to make the question clearer. Now we know that for this problem, we need two factors of -8 that add to -7. The factors of -8 are: plus or minus; 1,2,4,8. Find me two of those that add to -7 and multiply to -8

if y^2-7y-8 then ans: y^2-7y-8=0 y^2+1y-8y-8=0 y(y+1)-8(y+1)=0 (y+1)(y-8)=0 (y+1)=0 or (y-8)=0 y=-1 or y=8
