It depends in what context you're talking about. Talking about Psychology of the Organizations and Work, you would find the expression "Core Competences": that is the most importants characteristics (in fact, indispensable characteristics) required of a worker to do a job. Moreover, it could represent the main goal of a organization when offering his product to the market. A core competence of an organizarion could be: to product clothes with the best quality of the market. Think about the core competences of the Apple... They ALWAYS will launch products with the best performance and always before than the other organizations (at least, for the next years).
