Find the measure of angle E.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

geerky42 (geerky42):

You know the total angle for this polygon?

geerky42 (geerky42):

@melaniejeannn

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would it be 1260?

geerky42 (geerky42):

To find the total number of degrees in any polygon, all we have to do is divide the shape into triangles then count how many triangles there are then multiply the number of triangles by 180º. Yes it is 1260º. Now add up all angles then set it equal to 1260º. I know it may take time, but I don't know any shortcut, sorry...

geerky42 (geerky42):

Can you handle it? All you have to do is add and combine the like terms.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

54x - 5 = 1260 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x = 23.24

geerky42 (geerky42):

I got 55x - 5 = 1260

OpenStudy (anonymous):

maybe i added wrong

geerky42 (geerky42):

yeah, this problem is abusive, don't worry about it. ok, Now solve for x. what do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x =22.9

geerky42 (geerky42):

You did add both sides by 5 then divide both sides by 55, right?

geerky42 (geerky42):

Because I get 23

geerky42 (geerky42):

55x - 5 = 1260 Add both sides by 5. 55x = 1265 Divide both sides by 55. x = 23 Is this clear?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh no i didn't i forgot the 5

geerky42 (geerky42):

Oh ok. so x = 23, right? If you take a look at angle E. it is equal to 7x + 9. So we need to turn x into 7x + 9. Do you know how to?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, i trhink. 7(23) + 9 = 170 degrees?

geerky42 (geerky42):

Excellence! That's your answer: 170º. Is this clear?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, thanks so much! :)

geerky42 (geerky42):

No problem. :)
