What is efficiency, and what is the unit of measure for it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

efficiency is Output work/ input work ; it has no unit since they cancel out Joules ------------------------ Joules

efficiency isnt just output/input. its USEFUL output/input. the same energy goes out as goes in. its just that most of the energy is wasted on heat/light/sound depending on what system you're using. since efficiency should always be between 0 to 1 it's usual to use the percentage sign (there are no units as it is just a number).
