what is the difference between the lateral surface area and the total surface area?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

That lateral surface doe not include the base(s).

Oh I get it thanks. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In general, lateral surface area does not include the base of the shape. For example, on a cone, the surface area is ALL of the area on the outside of the cone. This would be the circle on the bottom plus the curved surface around the cone. The lateral area would not include the circular bottom. For a cylinder, the lateral surface area is the curved side, not including the circular bottom OR top.

Thanks, it really helped. :)
