The key fact to know is the Dawe's severalty Act. This act attempted to assimilate Indians into mainstream culture by taking tribal landholdings, breaking them up, and giving them to individuals. This did result in partial assimilation, but many traditional Indian cultures refused to subject themselves to American culture.
