If the width of a rectangular piece of carpet is 2x + 1 yards and the length is three yards less than twice as long as the width, what is the area of the carpet?

zepdrix (zepdrix):

\[\large w=2x+1\] The length is a little bit less than twice as long as the width. If it was twice as long as the width, we would write it as,\[\large l=2w\] But it's not quite that long, it's 3 yards less than that.\[\large l=2w-3\] If we plug in our \(\large w\) we can get an equation for the length. \[\large l=2(2x+1)-3\]

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Then to get the area, we'll have to multiply \(\large l\) and \(\large w\).
