OpenStudy (jim766):

in order to add or subtract fractions you need to have a common denominator \[\frac{ y }{ 2y+4 }-\frac{ 3 }{ y+2 }\] (y + 2) * 2 = 2y + 4 \[\frac{ y }{ 2y+4 }-\frac{ 3 }{ y+2 } * \frac{ 2 }{2 }\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\frac{ y }{ 2y + 4 } - \frac{ 3 }{ y + 2 }\] Multiply the right hand side by 2 to get the same denominator and be able to subtract them. \[\frac{ y }{ 2y + 4 } - \frac{ 2(3) }{ 2(y + 2) }\] \[\frac{ y }{ 2y + 4 } - \frac{ 6 }{ 2y + 4 }\] \[\frac{ y - 6 }{ 2y + 4 } \]
