Carmen is laying carpeting in a square den with sides of 5.67 ft each. Estimate the amount of carpet she will need for the foyer, using whole numbers. 36 ft2 24 ft2 32 ft2 23 ft2

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

You need to find the area of the square den. Do you know the formula for the area of a square?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not really......

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not good at math.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

For a square with side s, A = s^2 The area of a square is the square of the side. That means multiply the length of the side by itself.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

A square has the same length on all 4 sides. This square has a side of 5.67 ft.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which means its approx. 32ft

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The area of the square den is 5.67 ft * 5.67 ft

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Correct. If the side measured 5 ft, 5 ft * 5 ft = 25 ft^2 (too small) If the side measured 6 ft, 6 ft * 6 ft = 36 ft^2 (too large) 32 ft^2 is in between 25 ft^2 and 36ft^2 just like 5.67 ft is in beteween 5 ft and 6 ft.
