This is a simple arithmetic progression sum. Lets take an example. If there are 3 teams playing then a total of 3 matches are played. where each team has hence played 2 matches with each other once. If there are 4, each would play 3 matches. The number of matches is found by - no. of teams x no of matches by each/2 which is 4x3/2 = 6 if number of teams = 18, then matches played per every team = 17. Hence here the case will be 18x17/2 = 153.
