A hippogriff rancher wants to enclose a rectangular area and then divide it into four pens with fencing parallel to one side of the rectangle (see the figure below). He has 970 feet of fencing available to complete the job. What is the largest possible total area of the four pens?

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

first =D harry potter!!! second we want to write a system of equations that will give us the largest possible area any ideas on how to start or equations that may be helpful in the long run?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

constrains are 970ft fencing, P=5x+2y objective is maximize area A=xy

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

where did you get the 5x+2y=P?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

um we set it up in class and thats what we got, could have been a slightly different problem though

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

ohhh the picture ok can you draw it i see where they might have got that from now, but if you could please just draw and label a picture for me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol how about a nice picture!

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

can you draw one on here and label it please

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

it will help in the long run

OpenStudy (anonymous):
