Similarities: * Both are federal systems of government, dividing power between national and regional (states/provinces) governments. * Both are representative democracies, with power lying in the hands of the people, through their elected representatives. Differences: * Canada is a monarchy, while the USA is a republic (no monarch). * Canada is a parliamentary democracy, wherein the head of government/chief executive (the prime minister) comes from the legislature. The USA is a presidential democracy; the chief executive (the president) is elected separately -- he or she does not come from the legislature.
