Robert E. Lee was the leading and commanding officer of the Confederate Army's (south) during the Civil War.

ashleynicolehamilton's answer is right. Just to add to it, Lee was respected on both sides -- he was educated at West Point in the North and was a celebrated leader with battlefield experience. But when his native state of Virginia seceded, he decided to serve his home despite his feelings that the Union should remain together.
