Seven times a number minus the number is -48. Find the number. the number is -8 the number is 8 the number is 6' I know the answer is 6 but how? I tried x-y=-48 then I do 7x-y=-48 then I go blank after that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

anyone??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

bump

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the answer is -8.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How is it -8?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you set -48=7n-n because 7 times a number (n) minus a number (n)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

solve for n

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-48=7n-n you get 8n between thoose two right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

7n-n=6n

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh you subtracted didn't see that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

common mistake

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok so I got -48=6n did the positive 6n turn itself into a -6 when multiplying with -48?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

solve for n so to do so you will divide -48 by 6 or -48/6 which equals -8 so n=-8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks
