Why did the Japanese bomb pearl harbor?

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

If this is a multiple choice i need to know the choices...but they bombed them at the beginning of WW2 in order to shock us and provoke us into war. They also had planned for this way more than they should have as they sent two or three rounds of bombers in.

Pearl Harbor did not happen at the start of WWII. WWII started in 1939. Pearl Harbor occured December 7, 1941.(sorry @snuggielad) The actual attack was a stratagic move by the Japanesse to destroy the US Pacific Fleet, before the US entered the war, IF ever.

Pearl Harbor really backfired because the next day, Congress declared war. This ultimately lead to the Allied Forces winning.
