the answer to the first question is trench warfare, the explaination is because of how trench warfare is made,basically two sides dug ditches just large enough to crawl through. The area inbetween these trenches was called no mans land. there was barbwire, mines, and bullets. It was a sucidial notion to attempt to cross, so soldiers would stay put and fire thier weapons.
