I have no idea how to even start this.. Could someone help me get going? Please and thanks! Develop at least one activity you could complete that'd help you understand some of the observable phenomena caused by the motions of earth, the sun and the moon.
A vertical pen on the earth and its shadow could show the motion of earth but I do not know any simple experiment which can show the motion of sun and moon :( anyone??
set up a long pendulum with a heavy bob from a high ceiling. If free from other intereferences(like air drag, winds etc so keep it enclosed from natural elements), the pendulum will execute a rotational motion. This will tell you that the earth is rotating about its axis. The time period of the rotation of the pendulum will tell you the earth's rotational angular velocity or in other words the time period of its rotation( you can measure it quite precisely if you are careful.) Note- This won't happen if you set up your pendulum on the North or the south pole as the pendulum will be parallel to earth's axis and hence the pendulum's hanging point won't rotate in that case.
I mean of course your experiment is possible to set up but isn't it much easier to take some data from NASA or just trust on what books say?
Exactly, avanice. This is for my online Earth-space science class. & Thank you so so much zaph!
