What are some good things to keep in mind when writing an argumentative essay?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1) Find a good topic, preferably one that will have two conflicting points of view (Examples: Should animals be used for research? Does age matter in relationships? Should the alcoholic drinking age be increased or decreased?) 2) Once you've found a topic, you should make a list for both sides of the argument and pick a side. 4) When writing, your first paragraph should present a brief explanation of your topic (which also includes your thesis statement). 5) Present both sides of the controversy. After describing the opposing side, gather evidence to support why your side is the better conclusion. 6) Avoid emotional language. In other words, know the difference between a logical conclusion and an emotional point of view.
