Usually in gothic stories, the plot involves someone being trapped in an oppressive/ stressful situation. In this case, Dr.Jekyll had a potion that could transform himself into Mr. Hyde. Mr. Hyde became more powerful, to his dismay, and he became and difficult to control. In the end, Mr. Hyde was his dominant personality. This supports the fact that Mr. Hyde IS Dr. Jekyll.
