That would depend upon whether the number of terms is Even or Odd... For example, for even number of terms, the '1' and '-1' cancel out leaving you with x=0... For odd, x=1... So the second step would change accordingly... and we can't write it as 'x' anymore... Btw, the photo is damn cool :-)
