America was supplying the Mujahideen (what is today the Taliban) with arms to combat the soviets. The war was unnecessarily started by the Soviets and is often known as the Soviet Unions Vietnam War. It was when the public image of the USSR and communism started to falter and was a contributing to the downfall of the Soviet Union and the Cold War.
