A plumber is laying pipe. His assistant digs a trench in roughly the shape of a rectangular solid measuring 150 ft. in length, 9 inches deep along both sides, and 12 inches wide at the top and bottom. How many cubic feet of earth did he remove (to the nearest tenth)?

1) is 150 ft * 1 ft * (9/12) ft, or 112.5 cubic feet. 2) Volume of the rod in cubic feet is 12 * pi * r^2, where r is the radius of the rod in feet, which is 1/24 = 0.0654 cubic feet * 490 lb/cu.ft = 32 lb. I found this on yahoo. Hope it helps!
